I am grateful… That this restaurant exists in San Diego.
I am grateful… That I finally went to try it (I was skeptical).
I am grateful… That I have a whole new appreciation for vegan restaurants.
Café Gratitude is a 100% organic plant based vegan restaurant in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood. I am by no means vegan but I do appreciate high quality, local and sustainable produce used in resturants. This new restaurant caught my attention a few months ago when I overheard two women raving about it after a yoga class…I immediately went home to research and was intrigued.
A very helpful tip, LOOK AT THE MENU BEFORE YOU GO! There are so many unique combinations of ingredients on the menu and every single one of them sounds delicious. Don’t be like me and take 30 minutes to make up my mind of what I wanted.
All of the items on the menu are named using powerful reaffirming words: fabulous, inspired, dazzling, happy, extraordinary…etc. To order you say “I am…fabulous” and your server will repeat it back to you “YOU are fabulous”. DUH! The ordering is a little too much for me but I love the concept of positivity and mental health along with healthy food.
But is there booze? YES!!! And that’s exactly where my experience at Café Gratitude began.
My friend Kelsey and I came here on a Saturday afternoon without a reservation. It was busy but not overcrowded by any means. We decided just to sit at the bar which served their full menu. We started off with a Sparkling Cocktail called EXCITED which is a mojito spritzer with lime, cucumber, muddled mint and sparkling wine. This was absolutely delicious. You could taste every single ingredient in this drink especially the fresh cucumber. Absolutely worth the $9 price tag.
We decided to skip appetizers and go straight for the entrees. This part was challenging because we had no idea what half of the ingredients were on the menu but the staff was very helpful. Kelsey got the GLORIOUS caesar salad tempeh wrap which was just that…GLORIOUS especially the coconut bacon! I decided to order the weirdest thing on the menu…kelp noodles. My dish was called LIBERATED, a delicious combination of kelp noodles, cherry tomatoes, black and green olives, arugula, basil hempseed pesto, cashew ricotta and brazil nut parmesan. TO DIE FOR! All the ingredients were so fresh and flavorful I wanted to lick my plate clean and seriously almost did.
In my opinion, the entree prices were very fair at around $15 each. Portions were HUGE and very satisfying which I was pleasantly surprised by considering this is 100% plant based food. You have to remember when eating at places like Café Gratitude you are paying a little extra for extremely high quality ingredients. You get what you pay for and I’ll leave it at that.
To end our meal we each ordered a drink to go. Kelsey got the COOL a mint chip milkshake with cashew coconut ice cream, fresh mint, vitamineral green powder, raw cacao nibs and vanilla bean. Honestly, you have never tasted a more fresh mint flavor in your life until you’ve tried this. There has to be some mini mint garden outside this restaurant that they hand pick the mint from to order because it was SO FRESH! I decided on the GOLDEN, a turmeric latte with turmeric juice, almond milk and honey. It usually comes hot but since it was 85 degrees today I asked for it iced- so creamy and flavorful.
Would I come back to Café Gratitude? I sat in the parking lot and texted my boyfriend and mom immediately that we had to go back! Cafe Gratitude also has a HAPPY HOUR from 3pm-6pm that I want to make it to as soon as possible.
Have you tried Café Gratitude yet? I’d love to hear about your experience!
