The 21-Day Sugar Detox- Week 3 + Final Thoughts

21DSD

You guys…I officially completed the 21-Day Sugar Detox!!! I think I deserve a medal or something because damn that was challenging.

Shockingly, the last thing I want to do to celebrate is eat a chocolate cake or chug a beer. I feel so good and have never had more energy so I’m not rushing to add sugar back into my life any time soon.

I’ll be honest the 21-Day Sugar Detox was hard but the lessons I’ve learned form this experience are so worth it. Before this plan I was so unaware about all the sugar sneaking into my diet from everything from my “healthy” almond milk coffee creamer to the frozen chicken I have used forever. WTF?! I also wondered why I got uncontrollable drops in blood sugar that caused me to panic if I didn’t eat food immediately and why despite how much I ran/worked out I couldn’t get a flat stomach.

It’s sugar you guys! It’s a sneaky little bitch that is in everything and causing us to feel anxious, sick, sleepy, bloated, out of control…etc.

If you are wondering if you should do the 21-Day Sugar Detox there are a series of questions and more information directly from the book in my post from Week 1

Everyone’s addiction to sugar is different so I’m so glad Bryce did the 21-Day Sugar Detox with me. He struggled in areas that didn’t even phase me like not adding condiments to food but I struggled with snacks. We interviewed each other for this post on what we thought would be the most challenging, what ended up being the most challenging, what differences we noticed in our bodies and then what we’re going to take away from the plan moving forward.

Enjoy and please leave a comment or shoot me an email Diana@LiveLeanEatGreen if you’d like to chat more about either of our experiences.

Bryce’s Experience:

What did you think the most challenging part of the 21-Day Sugar Detox would be?

  • I was the most worried about not having a drink or two over the weekend…I wasn’t too concerned with the food.

What ended up being the most challenging part of of the 21-Day Sugar Detox?

  • The lack of toppings…no cheese, no ketchup, hot sauces…etc. The food was very plain.

What differences do you notice in your body after these 21 days?

  • A lot of weight loss (-20 lbs), increased tastebud sensativity…sour things pop, sweet things are too sweet oh and my face broke out during week 2 and since has cleared up and my skin has never looked better.

What part of the 21-Day Sugar Detox will you carry with you moving forward?

  • Reading nutrition labels for added sugar and avoiding it most of the time. I still can’t believe some mustards had sugar in them. Thankfully there are alternatives that taste just as good without sugar.

My Experience:

What did you think the most challenging part of the 21-Day Sugar Detox would be?

  • No protein/nutrition bars! I live off of Perfect Bars (which have honey) and RX Bars (which have dates) and both were not allowed during the 21DSD.

What ended up being the most challenging part of of the 21-Day Sugar Detox?

  • The first week figuring out what balance of carbs, fat and protein your body needs. I tried doing the first week way too low carb for my exercise intensity and felt weak, dizzy and sick. After adding in sweet potatoes and quinoa I felt great! Remember no plan is 1 size fits all!

What differences do you notice in your body after these 21 days?

  • My stomach is so much less bloated, my skin has never glowed like this before and I haven’t been experiencing intense drops in blood sugar like I was previously.

What part of the 21-Day Sugar Detox will you carry with you moving forward?

  • I agree with Bryce I will always read nutrition labels on EVERYTHING and spent the extra $1 on the version without added sugar. I’m also going to keep cheese out of my diet. I’m surprised how easy it has been to go without it and I think it was causing a lot of my stomach bloating.

This was so interesting to read about both of your experiences! I have the world’s largest sweet tooth so I could definitely benefit from doing this sometime. I think the most challenging would be insisting on having something sweet after dinner. It’s such an annoying habit and I wish I could just quit doing it! haha.

That was so hard for me. I always have like a peanut butter cup (or two) after dinner so I was always craving chocolate at night. Having peppermint or ginger tea really helped but not going to lie the first few nights without my post dinner sweet were miserable.

I learned a lot just watching what the two of you were eating and not eating! It has certainly made me very aware to read nutritional labels on everything I buy and to avoid sugar as much as possible.
I’m very proud of both of you! Thank you for doing the hard work of the detox, so the rest of us could learn from you😍

Wow, what a great post! Most people don’t stop and realize just exactly how many products have sugar in them! Me included! I always wondered where that belly bloat came from! Thanks for sharing your experiences! xo

Thanks Luci! It’s kind of scary just how much sugar they sneak into EVERYTHING we eat.
