Long time no talk…
If you follow me on Instagram (which you should) you know I’ve been out in Austin, Texas this past week for work. While I didn’t get to do much exploring in Austin I did manage to sneak in a delicious lunch at Picnik, splurge on gourmet tacos at Velvet Taco and got to walk around The Domain to experience a little bit of nightlife.
As many of you know I work for Perfect Bar, the original refrigerated protein bar, in the field marketing department. I was out in Austin helping to generate awareness that Perfect Bars are now sold in select Costco locations in Texas WOO HOO!
After spending countless hours inside Costco it got me thinking on my flight home about all the healthy products I always purchase from Costco. It’s so easy to go in there and leave with chips, dips, frozen pizzas, mini wontons, ice cream…etc but there truly are some incredible healthy products hidden in there among all the crap.
Everyone has been talking about this new Netflix documentary called “What The Health“. I finally took the time to watch it this past weekend and I have so many thoughts I figured I’d just do an entire blog post going over what I agreed and disagreed with in the film.
Before I get started let’s just make things clear- I do not subscribe to any specific diet. I’m not vegan, vegetarian, paleo, whole 30, keto…or whatever other diet there is out there. I do my best to eat REAL, whole foods and in doing so I eat a ton of veggies, healthy fats, meats and guess what sometimes eat 5 slices of pizza and a bowl of real ice cream when I’m feeling really crazy!
That being said, I don’t think there is anything wrong with eating a plant based/vegan diet. It’s not my thing but heck it’s 98459984 times better than the standard american diet that’s filled with sugar, processed foods, booze…etc.
Getting back to the documentary…
I did a little research on “What The Health” before watching it since a lot of these types of films are simply propaganda for a cause. And welppp…”What The Health” is absolutely a biased film about the benefits of a vegan diet.
Hey, hey, hey!
I just got home from a work trip to Portland and am already craving an almond milk latte from Barista and drunken wings from Bang Bang mmmmmmmm.
Before this trip to Portland I had only been to the city once and was really only there for 24 hours so this was my first full on Portland foodie experience and you guys…it didn’t disappoint.
But since I’m honestly falling asleep trying to watch this NBA playoff game and catch up on emails I just wanted to give you all a quick little recap of all the awesome places I ate this weekend.
Enjoy and be warned there’s some serious food porn in this post.
When I go grocery shopping I typically try to avoid the frozen section…mostly because I have 0 self control and if ice cream or frozen pizza is on sale there’s a pretty good chance it’s ending up in my cart.
BUT there are some a frozen products that I love and that are actually pretty darn healthy.
So for this edition of “Friday Favorites” I wanted to share some of my favorite freezer finds and would love to know from you all what frozen products you’ve been loving.
Christmas is in 19 days…are you freaking out yet?
For once in my life I’m actually VERY calm.
The past few years I’ve ended up spending hundreds of dollars buying everyone in my family gifts, gifts for holiday parties, gifts for work events, gifts for friends, gifts for fitness instructors…etc but this year I’m really trying to make the holidays as affordable (but still enjoyable) as possible.
To do that my family and I are doing a “Secret Santa” exchange so I only have to buy 1 nice gift…WIN! My friends and I are not doing gifts and instead are doing “experiences” like meeting up for wine tasting or happy hours…WIN! And for everyone else I’ve picked out 5 gifts (under $25) that I personally own and am OBSESSED with that I think everyone else would enjoy too.
I’m sure you all have seen posts raving about collagen all over social media these days BUT what is it and can it really do all the incredible things it’s suppose to do?
I’ve been holding off doing this post for awhile because I wanted to speak about collagen from my own personal experience. For the past 6 months I’ve been using Vital Protein’s collagen mostly to help with my joints from running, prevent bone loss/ damage from my awful shin splints and decrease my anixety. With all the miracle supplements on the market I never expected to notice a difference from collagen but spolier alter…I fell in love with this supplement and really am a believer in the power of collagen.
But before I get into my personal thoughts/feelings/opinions about collagen let’s start with the basics…
Hey Hey Hey!
I can’t believe Thanksgiving is next week…uhhhh where did the time go?
Last year I made a ton of fun Thanksgiving recipes for the blog and I’m sorry guys but the holidays kind of snuck up on me this year…ooops! Don’t worry though I do have one fun Thanksgiving appetizer to share next week that is so delicious and literally takes 2 minutes to throw together.
Today I figured it had been awhile since I’d done a Friday Favorites post and I have discovered some pretty amazing products over the past month. These aren’t just products I’ve had once and liked…these are products that since I’ve tried them they have become weekly necessitates when going to the grocery store…sorry wallet.
I’ve talked a lot about how I’m taking some time to honor my body and cut back on my workouts but what I haven’t touched on is what I’m doing with my food intake.
I’ve done a ton of research (googling) on what to eat to help balance your hormones and consuming enough healthy fats seems to be one of the best things you can do as a natural remedy.
More avocados, almond butter, coconut oil, salmon…. YES PLEASE!
In my attempts to add more healthy fats into my diet I consulted the bible aka Run Fast Eat Slow* the incredible cookbook for athletes by Olympic marathoner Shalane Flanagan & chef Elyse Kopecky and found myself fascinated with their views on healthy fats and their role in keeping the body balanced. Just listen…
Not all nutrition bars are created equal.
Not at all actually!
At this point there are SO MANY different options out there for “healthy” nutrition bars it’s hard to know which ones are actually good for you and which are simply candy bars in disguise.
For this post I decided to do a little taste test/ ingredient review on 5 “healthy” nutrition bars that I’ve seen all over social media lately. I tried multiple flavors of each bar before writing this and randomly chose the flavors I took pictures of. This post is NOT sponsored and all my thoughts are my own.
What you eat for breakfast sets the tone for your entire day.
Think about it…
If you start your day with a doughnut and sugary coffee you’re going to be a lot less likely to eat healthy throughout the rest of that day. I don’t know about you but when I start my day wrong my mind immediately goes to “SCREW IT MODE” and I just figure I’ll get back on track the next day. Hello cheat day that turns into cheat week that turns into 20 unwanted pounds.
You guys, I’m telling you simply starting your day off with something healthy makes a world of difference in your energy, food cravings and overall mindset.
