One of the most basic rules of racing is not eating anything new or out of the norm the day before your run.
Well…rules are meant to be broken and over the past 3 years the day before the Hot Chocolate Run has transformed from a healthy day, laying low and walking around the expo to a full blown foodie fest!
Last year my mom, sister and I spent the day before the race sipping craft beer, eating a delicious lunch and obviously devouring all the chocolate at the expo. In the spirit of “running for chocolate” we decided to keep this tradition alive this past weekend and our food did not disappoint.
My 3rd Hot Chocolate 15k is officially in the books!
Before I start this recap I have to give a HUGE shout out to the race organizers and volunteers. I was blown away how organized this entire event was from start to finish.
There were no bathroom lines, parking was a breeze, corrals were actually enforced and there was hydration every mile or so on the course. AWESOME job Hot Chocolate run!!!
Anyway let’s start this recap out reviewing my goals for this race. My main goal was to finish (obviously) but also to use this as a practice run to get back into racing groove after 7+ months off. Well, spoiler alter…I ended up PR-ing on the course and am very confident that I can do the La Jolla half in a few weeks!
BUT the day didn’t quite start out as perfectly as it ended…
I woke up at 3:00 am yesterday (which for the record felt with 2:00 am with the time change) to drive up to LA to work the Hangar Half Marathon. When I arrived my caffeine hadn’t hit me, it was freezing and completely dark outside…needless to say I was a little bit grumpy.
Before the runners headed to the start line a few stopped by my booth to grab some samples and an older man came up and asked me if I was going to be running. Without even thinking I made a sarcastic comment and said “No way. I’m so happy I don’t HAVE to run this morning. Waking up this early to work was hard enough”. I expected him to laugh or walk away but his response totally blew me away. He said, “You never HAVE to run. You should always be thankful you get to run”.

I sure did despite the weather being CRAZY here in San Diego.
Last Friday one of the strongest storms in years hit California just in time for my beach camping trip. My family and I debated all week if it would be worth it to drive up to Leo Carrillo State Park in Malibu and test our luck with the weather or just stay home.
At the last minute we decided to go and figured if the storm got really bad we could always just pack up and leave.
Guess who just finished their first double digit run of 2017?!?!?

So quick story…I came straight home after trail running this morning and was so excited and proud of our mini running group I totally forgot to properly stretch and instead ate 5 oranges and some steak then headed out to the pool to enjoy this very unusual 80 degree weather we’re having in San Diego.
Fastforward 2 hours…I can hardly walk. Rookie mistake..ALWAYS properly stretch after long distance running. Especially when you are working up to distances you haven’t ran in errrrr 6 months? I should seriously know this by now haha!
Real talk… this post is a little bit late because of the Super Bowl yesterday. #sorrynotsorry
Can we please just talk about the game real quick WOW! I was rooting for the Patriots so during the first half I was in shock and all I could do is chug champagne to numb the pain of a 21-3 score going into halftime. Lady Gaga was whatever. I was hoping she’d bring out some guests but it was kind of fun hearing songs from like 6 years ago that I’d jam out to in college haha! During the 3rd quarter I was seriously falling asleep thinking how on earth could a Super Bowl be this boring but then the comeback started.
Football fan or not I think every single person who stuck with the game until the 4th quarter can appreciate how incredible the football was in those final 15 minutes and overtime. Fun fact…this was the first Super Bowl EVER to go into overtime and the Patriots made the largest comeback ever.
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve talked about running on my blog and I’m so excited to fill you all in on some GREAT news.
After my marathon (7 months ago) my body kind of went into shock. I had terrible drops in blood sugar that were causing major panic attacks throughout the day, I felt weak in my workouts, I was always dizzy, my joints ached, I wasn’t having a monthly period and overall just knew something was VERY wrong in my body.
After countless amounts of doctors visits, blood draws, ultrasounds…etc we finally came to the conclusion that I was overall pretty healthy (THANK GOD) but my body needed rest, I was severely lacking healthy fats in my diet and my hormones were thrown off.
It’s been so long since I’ve done a race simply for FUN!
All the half marathons I’ve been doing have been to achieve a certain time and to go out there and really push myself. So it was incredibly refreshing to run the Hot Chocolate Run with my family and friends 100% stress free.
And thank goodness this was a stress free race because the start times were EARLY!
There are 2 races in the Hot Chocolate Run a 5k and a 15k. My sister, Tara, did the 5k so we had to get downtown San Diego by 6:00 am for a 6:40 am start time.
We made it in plenty of time and of course had to snap some pre race pictures.
One of the highlights of the San Diego Hot Chocolate Run is always the expo.
Normally race expos are pretty boring but this one has hot chocolate samples, chocolate covered marshmallows…really chocolate everything.
My mom and sister are doing this race with me so we decided to turn race expo day into a full day of exploring downtown San Diego.
Normally I would never eat like this before a race but hey tomorrow’s race is just for fun so might as well relax and indulge a little right?
Here we are on the LAST day of 2015. This past year was definitely centered around running and pushing myself to achieve goals I never even knew were possible. I made one of my 2015 resolutions to finish a half marathon- not only did I finish one, but I got completely re-addicted to running!
The addiction is real!
