We’re just going to jump right into this post because it’s going to be a long one.
I swear you can’t even make up the crazy things that seem to happen the day before/ day of a race. On Saturday I had to go pick up my mom from the airport at 8:00 pm. I figured this would be perfect…I’d grab her, drive up to my parents house then just stay the night and could leave from their house for the La Jolla Half in the morning.
So I show up to the airport and park in the cell phone lot where you can chill until people’s flights arrive. I turned my car off and sat for about 25 minutes waiting for her to text me that she had landed. When I went to start my car to drive over and grab her…DEAD! My car had completely died. We’re talking would only make a terrible clicking sound when I tried to start it status.
My 3rd Hot Chocolate 15k is officially in the books!
Before I start this recap I have to give a HUGE shout out to the race organizers and volunteers. I was blown away how organized this entire event was from start to finish.
There were no bathroom lines, parking was a breeze, corrals were actually enforced and there was hydration every mile or so on the course. AWESOME job Hot Chocolate run!!!
Anyway let’s start this recap out reviewing my goals for this race. My main goal was to finish (obviously) but also to use this as a practice run to get back into racing groove after 7+ months off. Well, spoiler alter…I ended up PR-ing on the course and am very confident that I can do the La Jolla half in a few weeks!
BUT the day didn’t quite start out as perfectly as it ended…
I have to start this race recap out by giving a HUGE shout out and thank you to the Fit Foodie Race Series for putting on a wonderful race and for choosing me to be an ambassador. I was truly blown away by their generosity and will be doing this race every single year!
Not to spoil this whole post but I didn’t meet my goal of running a sub 50 minute 10k. In fact I had to really slow down my training due to some minor health concerns that I’ll talk more about on the blog next week.
I’m healthy and fine but my doctor highly recommended cutting back on my mileage and not running at high intensity for a bit. I know this sounds like most peoples dream…okay doc I’ll not exercise…but for me I’m STRUGGLING!
Exercise, especially running, is my outlet for stress and without it I’m low key going crazy!
I want to start this race recap by giving a HUGE shout out to everyone who helped make America’s Finest City possible. This was the most organized race I’ve ever ran and really appreciate all the handwork and effort that must have gone into planning.
Everything from the expo to having a water station every mile was flawless!
I’ve seriously tried to write this post 987585 times now but couldn’t keep my thoughts straight.
So here we go…a very real, honest race recap of my first full marathon EVER! I promise I’ll keep it as short as possible with lots of pictures!
Before the race:
This race was a destination race for me. I live in San Diego and chose to do my first marathon in Seattle since I’ve always wanted to see the city and what better of an excuse to finally go up there right?
Doing a destination race takes A LOT more planning than I realized. You need a hotel, a rental car, you need to pack all your running gear, research restaurants near you and really study the course map so you know where the heck you’re going to be running and where people can meet you along the course (more on that later).
This past Sunday I ran the La Jolla Half Marathon with my boyfriend (Bryce) and my mom. Big shout out to my dad who didn’t run but was also there for moral support!
I have been stressing about this race for weeks and am so relieved it’s over. We’re seriously talking stress to the point of having race nightmares and waking up drenched in sweat status.
All this stress is over the fact that my shin splints have been so bad lately. It’s so frustrating to put your heart and soul into training then have it completely thrown off by an injury.
I’ve been a lot of research on how to heal shin splints quickly and on shoes that offer enough cushion to not further aggravate the injury. Out of total desperation I bought myself a pair of Hoka Infinite shoes, ran in them once and crossed my fingers that my legs would be fine in them for the race. Hoka shoes are known to be some of the best for people with running injuries so I figured I had nothing to lose.
On that note…
DO NOT. I repeat, DO NOT ever do what I did and buy a new pair of running shoes a couple days before a race (more on that later).
It’s been so long since I’ve done a race simply for FUN!
All the half marathons I’ve been doing have been to achieve a certain time and to go out there and really push myself. So it was incredibly refreshing to run the Hot Chocolate Run with my family and friends 100% stress free.
And thank goodness this was a stress free race because the start times were EARLY!
There are 2 races in the Hot Chocolate Run a 5k and a 15k. My sister, Tara, did the 5k so we had to get downtown San Diego by 6:00 am for a 6:40 am start time.
We made it in plenty of time and of course had to snap some pre race pictures.
